P!nk “Trustfall” Tour, Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, November 8, 2023
P!nk (Alecia Moore) skyrocketed like a superhero through Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse with her intense aerial performance of twirling, free-falling, and zip-lining across the vast arena. She connected with the audience (quite literally), all while belting out her songs, chatting in between, and waving to her fans. The show, in a word, was SENSATIONAL! The show has no limits as she displayed her vulnerability and trusted her team fully like her life depended on it. (And, frankly, it did!)
P!nk’s performance exceeded her soulful singing; it was an audio-visual delight.
It was a brisk, windy night in downtown Cleveland as fans filed into the sold-out arena, donned in sequin hair, glitter platform heels, pink-colored merch, and some dressed to the nines. Those who know P!nk are thrilled that her shows will have some exceptional aerobics, and she delivered a stunning 4-act sensational performance.
At an album release party earlier this year, P!nk was asked to describe the title of her record, replying: “Trustfall is sort of…it’s two things. I feel like we are kinda…feel like we’re falling backward, and we don’t know where the ground is. Y’know, that’s an unsettling feeling when you don’t know when to brace. But it’s also that freedom in falling and letting go completely.”
The stage was set with an arched neon-framed movie screen. In front of the screen were two stage levels. The upper left side of the stage had a large drum kit and the right side had the percussion and piano team. The lower stage, flanked on both sides, had musicians, backup singers, dancers, and aerobic performers. Large mobile pink flamingos were parked on each side of the stage. Above the stage by the light rig was a large display of bold lips that smiled on the crowd. Both sides were large neon words that read, “TRUSTFALL.”
The party started as the stages lit up with pulsing flashes, an electric music crescendo, and laser beams shooting from the ceiling into the audience. A large spotlight lit up the bold lips as they opened. P!nk dressed in sequined unitard and glitter platform shoes, waved hello to the now-standing and screaming audience.
She was harnessed to a Bungie apparatus and suddenly dropped her head-first towards the stage then quickly snapped back up and down all while she twirled, flipped, and jumped around mid-air. The music blared her 2001 hit “Get the Party Started,” as she landed safely and removed the harness to dance down the catwalk with three of her dancers. It wasn’t long before she re-harnessed as her dancers pulled down on the Bungie so that she would spring back into the air. She was greeted by two upside-down acrobats that were attached to neon diamond rings. They pulled her Bungie strings like a marionette while she continued to twirl, dance, and sing powerfully yet effortlessly.
P!nk truly loves her fans. There is an authenticity about her. She walked around the catwalk to talk to a few fans. One fan gave her a bag of Twizlers. She ate some on stage and shared the rest with a fan. She said that the only time she gets to eat candy is when she is on stage as her children seem to know when she has some. There was a young author in the audience who gifted Pink her new book. P!nk took the time to talk with her and promised that she would read it later.
“Raise Your Glass” pumped up the crowd and the entire tour group was engaged. The backup singers, musicians, and dancers stomped and jumped throughout the song while a few of the dancers rode the pink flamingoes up and down the catwalk. They rocked through “What About Us.” P!nk climbed up to drummer (Brian Frasier-Moore) to pound out “Just Like Fire,” as it morphed into Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker.”
The song “Turbulence” began with P!nk maneuvering into dangling silk ropes as she was joined by a male dancer. He moved sensually with her and then twirls and releases her while she is raised up swirling and spinning. She maneuvered herself upside down, merely balancing on the silks. She works her way back down to the stage where she is joined again by her male dance partner and they spin together in a series of synchronized moves that was truly amazing to watch and of course, there is no harness or net.
She is strong, powerful, and courageous in every aspect; physically, vocally, and creatively,
The next segment was a bit slower-paced, where her piano player came out and she sang “Just Give Me a Reason, “Please Don’t Leave Me,” a Bob Dylan cover, and “Make You Feel My Love.” This gave fans a reprieve from standing. “Cover Me In Sunshine” was written by P!nk and her daughter (Willow Sage Hart). The song focuses on when they were quarantined during the COVID era. Fans were delighted as she brought her out to sing the song. Willow’s voice was sweet and angelic and she sang with confidence and poise.
Act IV’s “Trustfall” is a theatrical and soulful song. It is poetic and has a rhythmic beat where she had aerial dancers jumping on trampolines to land on and off parallel staircases where she joins them on the staircase platforms.
During the punky “Never Gonna Not Dance Again” P!nk introduced the dancers, aerial artists, and musicians. They were showcased throughout the number and they are a truly talented team.
The Encore, “So What,” saw P!nk wearing a silver chain-link catsuit and sparkly platform shoes. She is harnessed to a zip line that is able to reach all levels of the arena. She twirls, flips, and dives as she moves around the arena, stopping on small platforms to sing to the fans, and doing stand-ups on the platform for fun.
Wednesday’s show was exactly that … a Trustfall! She let go completely and we didn’t know when to brace.
