You may feel funny at first, but that’s the point! “Just say ‘Pussy!’” It’s not a bad word!
Cleveland Heights’ Grog Shop could hardly contain the energetic blend of punk and indie rock that is Mannequin Pussy Friday night (04.12.2024). The small sold-out venue bodes well for the band’s raw intensity and unapologetic energy. Mannequin Pussy has the perfect blend of music to where one could silently sob and headbang at the same time *True Story.
This tour brings the band back to the fans after a five-year hiatus of new music. Mannequin Pussy just released their fourth studio album titled ‘I Got Heaven,’ and it is honestly just as electrifying as their previous works (if not more), melding vulnerability and ferocity that resonated deeply with many.
The crowd roared in anticipation of an exhilarating set from the band, which is known for bringing passionate performances. The band started the night off quietly, opening with a few songs off their new album. “I Don’t Know You” is a hauntingly beautiful track that translates seamlessly on stage. Lead singer Missy Dabice‘s striking vocals flawlessly alternated between soft melodies into intense whirlwinds of heavy guitar and drums. T
The band captivated their audience with each and every song. They also played one of my personal favorites from their third studio album ‘Patience.’ The track “Drunk II” clearly held a place in a lot of people’s hearts, as Dabice could barely be heard over the crowd. The first half of their set primarily consisted of their “slower” songs, presumably to leave the second half of the night to their more exhilarating and mosh-pit-worthy numbers.
Dabice sang the intro to “I Got Heaven,” which turned the page for the evening for a highly enthusiastic rest of the show! Mannequin Pussy played their new album almost in its entirety. The new tunes were sprinkled throughout the set, mixing in familiar with the new-to-me songs!
Mannequin Pussy delivered a cathartic performance that definitely left a lasting impression. Their music is not just heard but felt on a visceral level. If you have the chance to catch them live, don’t miss it.
Soul Glo put on quite the powerhouse performance for an opener, instantly catching the room’s attention. With a similar punk vibe as Mannequin Pussy, Soul Glo had no trouble warming up the crowd to get them ready for the night ahead.
