Lyle Lovett Concert Review

Denise Fenner by Denise Fenner
August 3, 2024
in Concert Reviews
Reading Time: 5 mins read

Before music legend Lyle Lovett and his ensemble stepped onto the stage, one could sense the dynamic musical event that was about to unfold. The stage at Akron’s Goodyear Theatre was bursting at the seams, barely able to contain Lovett’s expansive “big band.” Every inch of the stage had a purpose, contributing to the distinctive sights and sounds that define a Lyle Lovett performance. Front, middle, and back lines, along with raised tiers, were strategically placed to accommodate the diverse array of musicians that Lovett incorporates into his performance.

Fourteen artists, including Lovett, were part of tonight’s performance. The rhythm section featured two guitar players, a steel guitar player, a bassist, and a drummer. The keys were handled by a pianist, who also played the organ. The horn section was elaborate, featuring a trumpet, a trombone, and two saxophone players. Additionally, there were three backup vocalists accompanying Lovett. The sound was crystal clear, and the musicians were a blend of seasoned veterans who played flawlessly. Many of them had played with Lovett for decades. It was truly a pleasure to see and hear.

While he is a renowned country artist, Lovett’s talent and vision encompass so much more as he crosses over from country to folk, jazz, blues, and swing.

Four-time Grammy Award Winner (including Best Country Album and Best Country Male Vocal Performance) Lyle’s distinctive voice, style, and ingenuity prove that the boundaries of country music are limitless. His idea that he can influence any genre with a unique twist is captivating and unforgettable. He often takes suggestions from other artists to see what might add to some of his songs.

The lighting was moody and warm, and spotlights highlighted solos and key moments, enhancing the visual experience based on the song performed. Lovett expressed several times during the show how he loves what his musicians appear to share his passion. Each band member was introduced by Lovett, who shared many details of their lives, where they are from, and other experiences they have had. Many of them spoke during the concert, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

The night kicked off with his ensemble’s “Cookin’ at the Continental,” a hard bop piece alive with mood and style that set the perfect energy for the evening. Hard bop, blending blues, R&B, and gospel, has a defined groove and rhythm enriched with African American influences. In Lovett’s rendition, each member of his Large Band shone, showcasing their talents during this jazz-infused performance. The audience clapped in sync with the beat and applauded each solo.

Lyle approached center stage to a cheering audience to perform “Black and Blue.” Lovett, known for his distinctive style, wore a well-fitted suit and a white shirt with a silk tie adorned with bubbles. His flair for elegance, either contrasted by a touch of country or pop culture, mirrors his eclectic musical style. His performance of “Black and Blue” was welcomed with the audience singing along quietly

The band, comprised of seasoned musicians, each brought their unique flair to the performance. Jim Cox’s piano and organ added a playful touch, while Pittsburgh native and highly-sought studio musician Russ Kunkel’s drumming provided a subtle yet essential foundation. Leland Sklar’s iconic bass lines added depth, and James Harrah and Jeff White’s guitar work provided infectious grooves and rhythms. Buck Reid’s steel guitar added a touch of country and Western influence, and the horn section, featuring Brad Leali, Mace Hibbard, Steve Herman, and Charles Rose, delivered bright and punchy lines. The vocal section, including Willie Greene Jr., Lamont Van Hook, and Amy Keys, added soulful elements, harmonies, and a powerful stage presence.

“Church” brought out the gospel side of Lovett’s style. With the audience clapping along as if part of a congregation, the house was filled with spiritual energy. The song featured the backup singers, who brought deep vocal tones and harmonies with a rhythmic call and response. The performance was a powerful and uplifting experience, with everyone swaying to the music. Lovett also shared heartwarming stories about his 7-year-old twins, expressing that while he knew having kids would be enjoyable, he had no idea it would “just be fun.” He loves taking them on tour, and they keep track of all the states they visit. Another highlight of traveling with them is that he gets to tuck them in with a kiss after his shows.

Throughout the show, Lovett shared many witty and colorful stories reflecting his life’s journey. Notably, he recounted a story about his college friend Robert Earl Keen, with whom he shared a deep interest in music, leading to their eventual collaboration on the fan favorite “This Old Porch.”

Lovett shared his passion for motorcycles and talked about one of his favorites, the Penton, which was made in Amherst, Ohio. He also gave a shoutout to Jack Penton, an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer, who was in the audience with his friend Larry. You always meet friendly people at the Goodyear Theater.

We all loved Lovett from start to finish, with no opener. He and the Large Band entertained us for over two hours (20 songs) before finishing the night with a big encore. Added to that the intimate feel (1,400 seats) and the amazing acoustics of the venue, this show was, without a doubt, the best the Goodyear Theater has brought us this year.
