GWAR unleashed absolute chaos at Cleveland’s Globe Iron on Sunday, September 21, packing the venue to the maximus, on their Return of Gor Gor tour. Supporting their latest album of the same name, the band tore through a set that was as loud, bloody, and unhinged as fans could hope for. This was more than just a concert—it was a fully immersive world of carnage, satire, and absurdity that’s made GWAR one of the most beloved cult acts in heavy music.
Since their formation in Richmond in 1984, GWAR have been celebrated with a Grammy nomination, critical recognition for their multimedia contributions, and a legacy of inspiring generations of metalheads, punks, and performance artists. Even after the tragic loss of founding frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) in 2014, the torch has been carried valiantly by Blöthar the Berserker (Michael Bishop), who leads the band with the perfect mix of absurdity, satire, and pure brute energy.
The band kicked things off in spectacular fashion with “Fuck This Place,” immediately soaking the pit in fluorescent streams of fake blood as caricatures of pop culture icons met gruesome fates. From there, GWAR blasted through fan favorites while new songs from The Return of Gor Gor kept the energy razor sharp. Toward the climax, they summoned the infamous Gor Gor—a towering foam Tyrannosaurus Rex from band lore—for a hilarious and gory showdown before slaying the beast to the crowd’s roars.

Audience participation is always part of the GWAR experience, and Cleveland delivered in spades. Fans showed up in their finest freak gear—Mohawks, leather, spikes, and DIY monster get-ups—making the crowd feel like an extension of the stage’s universe. White T-shirts were the unofficial uniform, worn proudly by those ready to be baptized in blood. Even the security staff leaned into the fun, donning ponchos branded with the GWAR logo.
The theatrical mayhem included appearances by celebrity satires destined for outlandish fates: Elon Musk beheaded in the opening act, Trump disemboweled in grotesque fashion, Vladimir Putin’s oversized hands lopped off, and even a pregnant Taylor Swift cut open to unleash a blood-spewing “baby” on the crowd. Few bands could balance this level of shock with such biting humor, and it’s exactly why GWAR continues to endure where others would fade.
This show followed hot on the heels of their recent Let There Be GWAR celebration, an anniversary event that brought together fans, artists, and longtime crew to honor the group’s four decades of outrageous creativity. The event showcased rare costumes, artifacts, and archival footage, affirming GWAR’s status not just as a band, but as an ongoing art project with a worldwide cult following.
By the end of the night, fans left Globe Iron soaked, bruised, and grinning ear to ear. GWAR is heavy metal theater at its most extreme, and their Cleveland stop proved once again why their shows aren’t just concerts—they’re rituals of blood, laughter, and chaos that no one else on Earth could possibly pull off.
