INTERVIEW JOHN VINCENT III

Joel Voorman by Joel Voorman
December 9, 2025
in Interviews
Reading Time: 7 mins read

When singer-songwriter John Vincent III takes the stage at The Agora Theater on Friday, December 19, he’ll be stepping into more than another tour stop. For the Akron-area native, this hometown return feels like a full-circle moment — one woven with family roots, road miles, and the kind of folk-rock honesty that’s earned him over two million monthly listeners on Spotify.

“I’ve still got a lot of family in Akron,” John says. “My immediate family’s kind of slowly working their way back to Ohio. It’s an exciting time — holidays are going to be spent here again, and I’m excited about it.”

The Agora show is one of just two special co-headlining dates pairing John with fellow Ohioan Michael Marcagi, another breakout storyteller whose blend of Americana and indie pop has soared this past year. The two will share the bill only in Cleveland and Cincinnati, a brief Midwest moment of melody that feels remarkably grounded in home-state pride.

If there’s one thread that runs through John’s music — from his debut ‘Songs From The Valley’ to his acclaimed 2023 LP, ‘Songs For The Canyon’ — it’s motion. His songs live somewhere between stillness and departure: open-ended, reflective, always rolling toward a horizon.

That outlook was tested — and deepened — during COVID-19, when John and his girlfriend loaded their Ford Transit van and set out for what turned into an eight-month road trip across the U.S. “We just started driving,” he recalls. “We put a bed in the back of the van and said, ‘Fuck it.’ We ended up seeing parts of the country we never would have otherwise — the middle of nowhere in Alabama, central Florida, all over. I was just living for eight months, which was refreshing.”

That journey became the emotional engine behind ‘Songs For The Canyon,’ co-produced by Grammy-winner Tom Elmhirst (Adele, David Bowie) and crafted with a dream team that included Tony Berg (boygenius), Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers), and Jonathan Gilbert (Mt. Joy). Critics praised the record as a modern folk masterpiece — intricately detailed, cinematic in scope, and charged with lived-in introspection.

“I can’t always explain how the trip changed my songwriting,” John admits, “but it definitely did. That time shaped me.”

With the pandemic behind him, 2024 became John’s breakout touring year. First came a run opening for chart-topper Noah Kahan, a festival-sized stage leap that proved both terrifying and transformative.

“Those shows were amazing — nerve-wracking at first, but amazing,” he says. “The first night in St. Paul, there were 18,000 people. We were side stage thinking, ‘Holy shit!’ That was our first proper tour as a band. But once the first song was done, it just turned into the best time. Noah’s whole team was great, and we’ll always be grateful for that experience.”

Soon after, his own Roadtrip Tour took off — a name pulled straight from that fateful van adventure. This time, he headlined across North America, the U.K., and Europe, selling out rooms and connecting with a growing audience drawn to his warmth and vulnerability.

“It felt like my first real headline tour ever,” he says. “We’d only done a little four-show run before COVID, so being out for a month with a full band — some of my best friends — made it special. A lot of those cities were places none of us had ever even been before, so it was this beautiful mix of nerves and gratitude.”

At one point, standing on stage in Stockholm, John realized just how far that van had taken him — from backroads to global stages. “It was humbling,” he says. “Being able to play for a room full of people on the other side of the world made me feel validated, like maybe all those choices to keep at it were worth it.”

Now based in Nashville, John has settled into a creative rhythm — splitting time between the collaborative pulse of Music City and the reflective quiet he carries from the Ohio countryside. It’s a balance you can hear in his songs: tiny details that feel lived-in, melodies that feel like open fields.

He describes his process less as writing and more as archiving moments. “I’ve got a handful of songs written and a couple recorded,” he says of his next project. “I’m piecing the album together slowly — no firm timeline yet — but I want to get a few songs out in the next few months and a full record next year. Then tour a bunch. That’s the goal.”

If ‘Songs For The Canyon’ was about wide-open spaces and the restorative power of travel, John hints that what comes next may find him looking inward — toward home, toward connection, toward what it means to keep building something bigger than yourself without losing what feels intimate.

“A lot of these songs, they’re about memory and proximity,” he says. “The distance between yourself and the person you were. The distance between home and wherever you end up.”

The Agora show promises to showcase not only John’s songwriting chops but his effortless charisma — equal parts earnest and tongue-in-cheek. He laughs as he imagines what fans can expect from a hometown gig.

“If you want to hear my mom and dad screaming at me from somewhere in the room at the end of every song — just pure moral support blasted into the air — then come to The Agora,” he jokes. “It’ll be me, some folk music, a lot of loving noise, and a couple of Ohioans putting on a damn good show.”

John’s live performances have developed a reputation for their emotional weight wrapped in gentle humor — moments where his melodies can hush a crowd one minute, and his self-deprecating wit can have them laughing the next. It’s that balance that keeps his audiences so loyal — and why a show like this feels less like a concert and more like an old friend stopping by to play a few new tunes before dinner.

And there’s a good chance a few new tunes will make it onto the setlist.

“I’ve been feeling really inspired lately,” he says. “I think some of these new songs might be ready to live in front of people. That’s the real test — seeing how they breathe in a room like that.”

Like many artists rooted in both nostalgia and wanderlust, John’s connection to Ohio is a steady undercurrent — a place he left but never really left behind.

“I think living elsewhere helps you appreciate where you come from,” he reflects. “When we moved away, I didn’t think about it much, but now, especially making music and touring, it hits me how much I carry from back home.”

That sense of continuity — the same small-town sincerity that first drew listeners to his early indie-folk singles — remains central to who he is. Whether it’s introspective ballads like “Highway Woman” or the luminous “Bluebird Singing,” John builds emotional landscapes that feel cinematic but never distant.

You don’t just hear his songs — you inhabit them.

So when John Vincent III walks onto The Agora stage this Friday, it won’t just be another stop on a busy winter road. It’ll be the culmination of a journey that started in a childhood backyard in Copley, stretched across thousands of miles of highway, and now loops back — one evening only — to the place where it all began.

For Cleveland fans, the moral is simple: don’t miss this one. There’s a good chance you’ll leave humming a new favorite tune… and maybe with a bit of ringing in your ears from a proud mom or dad shouting, “That’s our boy!”
