While many think of the most exciting concerts as arenas filled to the brim with spectacle, stage lights, and performances that mirror theater, sometimes the venues with a bar in the back, no seats, and a stage barely above the floor hold the nights that become lifelong memories. You can feel the energy in the crowd, you can smell the sweat of the artists, and you have no choice but to be a part of the show. THAT is a priceless experience!
February 7 at the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights, Laundry Day, along with openers indie-rock band False Teeth and electronic-indie-pop DJ Satchel Shure, reminded people what it means to be “in the moment”.
False Teeth riled the audience up with their bass licks, guitar solos, and drum fills. All the elements, in no small part due to their vibrato, gelled together to create a stellar show from this up-and-coming talented group! With a guest appearance from Solon featured on one of the band’s top hits, “Saturday,” and a special playing of the unreleased “Heaven,” it was a set full of surprises.

Concerts are already experiences like no other, but they’re lifted to a new level when the bands themselves are having just as much fun. Ski masks, disco balls, and passing guitars into the crowd truly immersed all in attendance. Followed by a ceiling-rattling display of beats, remixes, and a fresh dive into the songs we all love, Satchel Shure kept attendees searching for more.
Laundry Day took to the stage and, from start to finish, never wavered in their command of the audience’s attention. Kicking things off with a fitting “R U READY?,” every song was not only sung by the performers, but the crowd as well. Especially their hits: “I KINDA LIKE THAT,” “Damn Shame,” and “FRIENDS.” Fans had waited out in the freezing (and I truly mean FREEZING) cold since the early afternoon to find a good spot near the stage, and undoubtedly it was worth the sacrifice. Not often do artists sound the exact same live as on record, but with neon green, magenta, and golden lights, they not only brought the similarly styled tour posters to life, but also the music.

Each member built on the other’s playing, amplifying their individual and collective talents. Sawyer Nunes traveled the stage—drums to piano to guitar back to piano and drums. It seemed there was no instrument or tune he couldn’t play — singing while doing it! The group gave shoutouts left and right to Cleveland and encouraged—successfully—the whole audience to jump. It may have gotten the venue to shake, but what great experiences don’t?
People are used to the end of the show being the true end. Even with an encore—“Why is Everyone a DJ?,” “SUPERMODEL,” and “SEE YOU IN ANOTHER LIFE.” Once the house lights come on, it’s a rush to get out the door and beat traffic (and, in Cleveland Heights, likely groan at the parking ticket on your windshield). Tonight was different, as each member of both Laundry Day and False Teeth stayed to mingle and enjoy the remainder of the evening. Not a single person left less than thrilled. What a night.
