INTERVIEW: BRIAN VANDER ARK (THE VERVE PIPE)

Brian Vander Ark ()

Brian Vander Ark at The Grove L.A.

In the ever-shifting landscape of the music industry, few artists possess the grounded perspective and seasoned resilience of Brian Vander Ark. As the frontman and primary songwriter for The Verve Pipe, he has navigated the dizzying heights of 1990s multi-platinum stardom and the quiet, gritty determination of the modern independent era. On Sunday, March 22, the Michigan-based rockers return to Cleveland to open for Our Lady Peace at the House of Blues, a pairing that serves as a high-octane celebration of alternative rock’s golden age.

In a recent interview with CleveRock.com, Brian Vander Ark pulled back the curtain on the band’s enduring legacy and their current trajectory. The conversation touched on everything from the life-altering impact of their seminal hit “The Freshmen,” to the newfound freedom that comes with operating an independent label. Brian also shared insights into the band’s recent milestone as the first-ever act to perform at The Celestia Theater, a brand-new venue in Wadsworth, Ohio, a moment that underscored the band’s continued relevance in the Great Lakes region and beyond.

The dialogue further explored the profound evolution of the music business, contrasting the “machine-driven” 1990s with today’s streaming-centric reality. Brian offered a candid look at how The Verve Pipe maintains its creative spark without the constraints—or the safety nets—of a major label, all while preparing a setlist designed to captivate both die-hard fans and newcomers in a high-energy opening slot.

For a band that once saw its videos in heavy rotation on MTV and its singles dominating FM airwaves, the transition to the digital age has been a lesson in adaptation. The Verve Pipe has operated under its own independent banner since 2001, a move that predated the industry’s massive pivot toward streaming. For Brian, this independence has redefined the very purpose of a song.

“Having our own independent label since 2001, things have changed dramatically,” Brian says. “Now, you no longer write for radio singles. You just write for anyone that might hear it as a measure of advertising; each song is like an advertisement. It’s like, ‘Hey, we’re going to flood the entire world with a handful of songs that we think are the most catchy in hopes that people will then go to our website or come to our shows.’ Really, that’s the only way to make any money and sustain a life being creative. So these little four-minute advertisements have to be as catchy as the hits were back in the day, but we don’t have the machine behind us that we would’ve back then, either. The benefit to that is the fact that when you don’t have a record label taking 90% of the profit, we can actually make some money while we do it.”

While the financial upside of ownership is clear, the streaming model presents a unique set of frustrations for artists who remember the physical sales boom. Brian is quick to point out the disparity between reach and revenue.

“The upside to it is you’re going to reach people from all around the world. And the other upside to it is that if you like a particular artist, then whatever streaming service you want will suggest, ‘Hey, you might like this.’ That’s been helpful too. The downside is 4 million streams of “The Freshmen” last quarter, I got to check for $200. You cannot sustain a living streaming the way you could when radio was having its heyday.”

When The Verve Pipe takes the stage at the House of Blues, they face the unique challenge of the opening act: winning over a crowd within a condensed timeframe. Having recently released the 2025 album ‘Reconciled‘, the band has plenty of new material to showcase, but Brian understands the delicate balance required to satisfy a nostalgic audience while pushing the needle forward.

“This is a really great question, and I’ve had this discussion with the band numerous times,” Brian explains regarding the setlist. “When you have an opening set, you don’t have the luxury of playing the typical 90 minutes to two hours that we normally play. And if the case is when we play in front of somebody else and perhaps some of those people are familiar with “The Freshmen” and “Photograph,” we have to play; songs are considered our best live songs aside from those. I’ve got a list of about six or seven songs that we probably are going to have to play every night only because it showcases each member of the band and these are that and the combination of the singles that we’ve had over the years. There’s little opportunity to play one or two new songs, so we’ll end up playing one, maybe two.

Looking back at the decade that launched them into the stratosphere, Brian sees more than just a trend; he sees a standard of musicianship that has become harder to find in the era of “buying a chorus.”

“The fact that the ‘90s seems to be back a little bit, and I have a comment on that,” Brian notes. “I feel like the ‘90s was the last time when you could trust that bands were getting together in a small space and writing their own music. There was a time in the early 2000s where everybody was covering—or not covering, but buying a chorus from somebody, some other publisher and saying, ‘I want to put that chorus that’s a surefire hit into my song and squeeze it into it.’ And I’m glad to see that people feel that the nineties was so authentic and I mean, I feel that way as well. I mean, sure there are a ton of bands that still write their own stuff, but I still feel like the ‘90s, we really had it from ‘91 until ‘99, I felt like people could trust that the musicians had great musicianship and we’re creative as well.”

That creativity was most famously distilled into “The Freshmen,” the breakout hit from their 1996 major-label debut, ‘Villains‘. The song, known for its haunting narrative and emotional weight, almost didn’t survive its first public performance.

“I had no idea that it would be as big as it was, and I didn’t have an idea that it would end up probably being my legacy,” Brian admits. “But the first time I ever played it, I’ll tell you this, I remember the very first time I played it. I played it and I wasn’t ready to play it. I didn’t know the song well enough and I messed up the words horribly that night. I ended up making up words and making up lyrics, but what I did have was ‘For the life of me,’ and I did have, ‘She was touching her face,’ and after I got done playing it, I had a dozen people come up and go, ‘What was that song about the girl touching her face?’ They loved it. I was like, ‘Oh, I’m onto something here. This could potentially be the one.’”

Brian reflects on the song’s “unintentional ambiguity” with the wisdom of hindsight. “I was a neophyte writer and I didn’t really know how to craft a song. And I look at the song now compared to what I’m doing and I go, ‘Oh man, it’s kind of weak.’ I’m not saying what I wanted to say. But on the upside of that, that just means that more people thought it was about them or their situation or whatever. And that’s word of mouth. And I can’t tell you how many times I get on… I make a TikTok video or whatever, and how people say, ‘Wow, this song hits a lot harder in my forties and fifties than it did in my teens and my twenties.’ And yes, back then the idea of singing at the top of your lungs with your friends about abortion and suicide, that’s a whole different, whole different animal. I mean, Ben Folds did it with “Brick,” but again, there was ambiguity in “Brick” as well, and that served both of our songs very well.”

While “The Freshmen” remains the anchor, Brian’s career has been remarkably multifaceted. He acted in the 2001 film Rock Star, contributing the song “Colorful” (found on the band’s album ‘Underneath‘) to the soundtrack. He has released several solo albums, including ‘Resurrection‘ and ‘Magazine‘, and even collaborated with actor Jeff Daniels on the 2016 project ‘Simple Truths‘.

His resilience is perhaps best exemplified by his “Lawn Chairs and Living Rooms” house concert series, where he stripped away the artifice of the industry to play directly for fans in their homes. It is this willingness to adapt—to move from the massive stages of a tour with KISS to the intimate setting of a fan’s backyard—that has kept Brian at the forefront of the independent music scene.

As he prepares to take the stage in Cleveland, Brian carries with him the lessons of thirty years in the spotlight. Whether he is playing the soaring melodies of “Hero” or the gritty riffs of “Villains,” he remains a songwriter’s songwriter, dedicated to the craft and the connection it creates.

The Verve Pipe will perform at the House of Blues in Cleveland on Sunday, March 22, opening for Our Lady Peace.
