Patrick Carney of Akron, OH natives The Black Keys joined CleveRock to chat about the duo’s upcoming 14th studio album, ‘Peaches!’ The conversation really takes fans on a journey of how Carney and Dan Auerbach turned their basement demos into The Black Keys everyone knows and loves today.
Carney touches on how their friendship and hardships really fueled this album into fruition. Long before Dan & Pat were performing in arenas and amphitheaters, a friendship started with a shared interest in digging through old records together and having dance parties. That sound that has defined them in many ways and continues to this day. That spirit is continued on this latest album.
‘Peaches!’ was a product of personal tragedy. Dan Auerbach’s latefather, Chuck, was battling cancer. While staying with Dan in Nashville, Patrick encouraged Dan not to sit still, but instead, join him in the studio. While recording, they worked on a kind of ‘sister’ album to 2021’s ‘Delta Kream.’ an album of covers, with very original twists. Carney tells CleveRock that Auerbach was the only person in the studio who had even heard the originals prior to the sessions! Most of these songs are interpretations of the original songs.
After a canceled tour, and a very successful amphitehater tour last year, The Black Keys are setting out to create a different experience in more intimate venues. This tour, it’s not about how big of a venue they can play or how much box office gross is coming in; it’s about creating the best possible experience for the fans.
