Picture this… you are sitting on a beach with warm sand beneath you, the sun on your face, and cool water lapping at your feet. In front of you, people are surfing and you hear music in the background. You turn to see where it is coming from and there is a party going on, singing, dancing, and smiles everywhere. That is what being at the Jack Johnson concert on Tuesday, July 7 felt like: A party at the beach! What a way to enjoy a summer night at Blossom Music Center. Was it hot? Yes! But I didn’t even care because it added to the vibe of the night.
Jack Johnson put on an incredible show for his SURFILMUSIC TOUR 2026. (I found out at the show that the tour namesake is connected to a film he made with his opening act, Hermanos Gutiérrez.) Did you know Jack Johnson makes surfing movies? I didn’t. This wasn’t even his first film. As a filmmaker myself, this had to be my favorite fact that I learned tonight. I was geeking out, for sure, especially when he brought Hermanos Gutiérrez back out on stage to show off their scoring skills for Johnson’s previous surf film, September Sessions. They scored scenes from the movie live right in front of us! That’s cool, right!?
Johnson has always had this laid-back style that makes fans feel like they are hanging out with an old friend. His songs have a way of slowing life down for a bit, reminding everyone to appreciate the simple things. Whether you’ve been listening to him for 20 years or just discovered his music, he has this effortless ability to make thousands of people feel like they’re sitting around a campfire listening to him play.
While he had Hermanos Gutiérrez out, they played five songs, but the one that stood out to me was “Hold On to the Light,” which Johnson wrote with Hermanos about a friend who passed away. What a moving moment to experience with Jack Johnson. He made this tribute even more special by playing video of his friend surfing behind them as they performed. It was beautiful and emotional to say the least.
I know this is about to be the most stereotypical notation from a fan on the younger side of those in attendance, but my two favorite songs of the night were “Banana Pancakes” and “Upside Down.” I was jamming! When he played “Upside Down,” I was six years old again, with my cousins, in my grandma’s living room, jumping around, listening to that song and watching Curious George. What made the moment even more special was that I had those same cousins there with me to enjoy the song. Years have passed, but that song still makes us dance!
The crowd also sang along to favorites like “Better Together,” “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing,” and “Taylor.” Every song had people smiling. I looked around the venue and saw families, couples, and groups of friends all sharing the same experience. It didn’t matter if fans had seen Jack Johnson 10 times or if this was your first show (like this reviewer), it was impossible to not feel like these were special moments.
Johnson has to be the nicest performer I have ever seen! He is kind, caring, and he even took requests from the audience during an acoustic portion of the show. Without a doubt though, the best moment was when he said that “Cleveland was the BEST crowd.
He claims that he has not said that to any other city. I don’t know if I believe him, but it sure felt good to hear.
This was a night to remember! Between the incredible music, the stories behind the songs, the live film scoring, and the laid-back atmosphere, it felt like escaping to the beach for a few hours without ever leaving Ohio.
