Driving three hours to Detroit for a concert is a commitment. Driving three hours to Detroit and leaving thinking, Yeah, that was worth it, is something else entirely. That was the case with WILLIS’ August 23 performance at El Club, where a smaller room, an enthusiastic audience and an energetic set came together for a surprisingly memorable night.
El Club’s intimate size immediately worked in the show’s favor. The crowd wasn’t particularly large, but the people who showed up clearly wanted to be there. There was a relaxed, almost hangout-like atmosphere to the night, helped along by the venue serving pizza and drinks and offering free water. It felt less like a massive concert production and more like being invited into a room where something fun was about to happen.
Once WILLIS took the stage, the energy in the room noticeably picked up. Opening with “IDWS,” the band moved through a set that included “Twist of Fate,” “Clover” and “Fight the Vegans,” keeping the momentum moving without ever feeling overly produced or rehearsed.
Later in the set, “Slow Party” and “Ballad of the Basement” continued to keep the crowd engaged, while “I Think I Like When It Rains” emerged as one of the night’s standout moments.

There was also plenty of personality mixed into the performance. Frontman Murphy Billings repeatedly referred to the crowd as “sexy,” a running joke that added a little levity and helped reinforce the casual, unpretentious vibe of the show.
In a smaller venue like this, the right lighting can make a big difference, and WILLIS’ setup complemented the performance nicely. Blue and red lights washed over the stage throughout the performance, creating an especially effective visual against the darkness of El Club. It gave the show some additional atmosphere without becoming a distraction from the music.
The band closed the night with “C.J.’s Van,” ending the set on an appropriately energetic note. By that point, the size of the crowd hardly seemed to matter. The people in the room had remained engaged throughout the night, and the band fed off that energy right through the finish.
One of the nicest parts of the evening actually came after the music stopped. I had the opportunity to speak with several members of WILLIS, and everyone I encountered was friendly and welcoming. That kind of interaction can be easy to take for granted, but it made an already enjoyable night feel even more worthwhile.
For my first drive to Michigan, I couldn’t have asked for a better reason to make the trip. WILLIS delivered an energetic and entertaining performance, while El Club provided the kind of intimate setting that allowed the band’s personality to come through. The crowd may have been small, but it was enthusiastic, and between the music, the lighting, the humor and the laid-back atmosphere, WILLIS made those three hours on the road feel like a pretty good investment.
