CleveRock: Do you have an accomplishment in your career that you are most proud of?
Dave Coulier: “I picked up a couple of Emmy Awards working on ‘Muppet Babies’ with Jim Henson from my voice-over work and that was a really nice feeling to be honored and recognized like that. I’m really proud of those two Emmys hanging up in my office at home. There’s lots of stuff that I’m proud of. It’s a continuous journey being in show business, especially being a stand-up, you always have to reinvent yourself and be fresh and come up with new thoughts and ideas.”
CleveRock: When you tape a sitcom or perform voice-over work, you don’t really get to feel your audience’s reaction. Is there anything comparable to hearing a room full of a few hundred people laughing at your material in person?
Dave Coulier: “That’s as good as it gets. I wrote this stuff and I get the immediacy from that audience. It’s just instant gratification and there’s only one way to work on new standup and that’s to be out there doing standup with that audience for it to come together. I’m really proud of this new hour I have. It’s written right into this ‘Full House’ demographic that I have, right into that sweet spot. Most comedians would probably go in a different direction. I’m not a hipster. I’m not a social commentary comedian. I’m not edgy. My special is called ‘Glorified Birthday Clown’ and that’s kind of how I feel. I just want people to come and laugh and forget that they’ve had a bad day.”
CleveRock: What projects are you currently working on outside of your stand-up tour?
Dave Coulier: “I’m proud of the stand-up stuff and there are always new projects coming down the pipe. I’m shooting a pilot in a couple weeks. I’m an airplane pilot, and I’m shooting a show called ‘Winging It,’ where I go around the country looking for funny places and things. I’m really proud that this show is coming together. There are lots of highlights along the way that I get to enjoy all over again.”
CleveRock: Sounds like a cool show! I hope that works out for you.
Dave Coulier: “We are either going to release it on television or the web. It will be on somewhere. That’s the nice about the internet, you can produce a show and say, ‘I’m just going to do this.’ I don’t thing Jerry Seinfeld’s ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’ would work on a network, but it sure works on the internet.”
CleveRock: What other irons do you have in the fire?
Dave Coulier: “I just did 62 Geico commercials that are running. I’m the voice of Kellogg’s Raisin Bran so you hear me on TV all the time doing that. I’m always in my comedy laboratory coming up with new ideas.”
