The Flaming Lips consists of Wayne Coyne (vocals, guitar), Michael Ivins (bass), Steven Drozd (multi-instrumentalist), Derek Brown (guitar), and Jake Ingalls (keyboards).
The band’s early sound was characterized by psychedelic and experimental rock, often incorporating unconventional instrumentation and studio effects. They gained a cult following in the 1980s and early 1990s with albums like ‘In a Priest Driven Ambulance’ and ‘Transmissions from the Satellite Heart.’
In 1999, The Flaming Lips released their breakthrough album ‘The Soft Bulletin,’ which was a critical and commercial success. The album’s lush, orchestral sound and introspective lyrics marked a departure from the band’s earlier work and established them as a major force in the indie rock scene.
The Flaming Lips have continued to evolve their sound over the years, incorporating elements of pop, electronica, and even hip-hop. They are known for their elaborate live shows, which often feature elaborate stage setups, costumes, and props.
Flaming Lips have won three Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Instrumental Performance for their song “Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)” in 2003.
The band’s most recent album, ‘American Head,’ dropped in 2020.
In addition to their music, The Flaming Lips are known for their charitable work and activism. They have been involved in numerous benefit concerts and fundraisers over the years, and have been outspoken in their support for causes like animal rights and environmental conservation.
