INTERVIEW: THE OFFSPRING (NOODLES)

Joel Voorman by Joel Voorman
August 1, 2025
in Interviews
Reading Time: 8 mins read

This 41-year-old interviewer has fond memories of listening to The Offspring during my life’s formative years. I remember 107.9 “The End” DJ Howie Green teasing the radio station’s debut of a new Offspring song, titled “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy).” Already a fan, this track from their 1998 album, ‘Americana,’ became an instant favorite. I sat by my radio with a blank cassette tape loaded in my boom box and was on standby to hit the record button the next time the song came over the FM airwaves.

In the world of punk rock, few bands have made as significant an impact as The Offspring. With a career spanning over four decades, the band has navigated the ever-changing music landscape while consistently delivering infectious melodies and raw energy.

From a young age, I wanted to try my hand at this music journalist thing. There’s not a lot of money in this field, but the fringe benefits are amazing. I get to talk to my favorite artists and attend more concerts than commoners could ever attend in five lifetimes.

Had someone told me in 1997, when I was listening to The Offspring’s album, ‘Smash’ and (unknowingly) awaiting the release of ‘Americana,’ that one day, I would have a band member on the other end of my phone line (for the third time) in 2025, I would have had a big smile on my face, knowing that I’d reached my goal of having a one-time career (now side hustle) in the field.

I once again had the pleasure of chatting with Noodles, the band’s iconic guitarist, last month. He up about the band’s creative process, the evolution of their sound, and the thrills of performing live. In this candid conversation, Noodles reflects on the balance between studio work and touring, the changing nature of music consumption, the joy of connecting with fans across multiple generations, and whether he feels The Offspring belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Offspring has never been a band to rest on its laurels. I’ve interviewed several bands this past month who rely solely on their back catalog of several decades ago (looking at you, Gin Blossoms, Fastball, and Sugar Ray) to draw fans to their concerts. They are still making records, releasing ‘Supercharged’ in 2024. (The Bob Rock-produced record features drum contributions from recent-headline-making Josh Freese, who was oddly dismissed from Foo Fighters and soon after rejoined Nine Inch Nails.)

The album’s lead single, “Make It All Right,” peaked at #1 on the Rock Airplay chart!

Noodles was asked what inspires the band to keep recording and striving to make critically acclaimed and fan-loved songs instead of be content with their success from past decades.

“We love going out and playing live, and the concerts are really important to us, but so is the other side of that coin, going into the studio and trying to create new music and see what we can come up with,” Noodles said. “[Frontman] Dexter [Holland] is especially driven with that. He’s always trying to write a song or two that are better than anything he’s ever done before, and, of course, it’s all subjective, but he just loves crafting music. So do Bob Rock and I, just kind of get in there, and I’m the babbling idiot giving the thumbs up or thumbs down, and occasionally, some guitar to it. But I just love the process. I love watching these guys work, and I love adding my two cents in. I think we came up with a really good record this time, but you’re right. Are we going out to promote a record, or do we put out a record to promote our tour? I dunno, it’s kind of reversed these days.”

The Offspring have been working with Bob Rock since their 2008 record, ‘Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace.’ Questioned as to what one of the most prominent producers in the biz can contribute to the band’s creative process in the studio:

“The way we started working with him is that he’s just in the studio while the ideas are flowing,” Noodles said. “Dexter used to kind of go off in the woodshed and sometimes demo and then come into the studio with all the ideas he’s got. Then, we try to record what he had already kind of figured out in his head. And even now, sometimes he’ll come into the studio with an idea pretty well in his head anyway, all put together. But then they invariably kind of change a little bit once we start recording them, and he thinks, okay, this idea that I had worked and this idea doesn’t, and Bob is there and he says, okay, yeah, there’s something here, and let’s see, this chorus is really pretty good. What about the verse? The verse maybe, could be, you got to lift it up so it matches the chorus. Then once we redo the verse, then he goes, ‘Okay, now the verse is outshining a chorus. You got to work on the chorus.’ And he really does kind of push us without making us feel like we weren’t doing well before. He’s like that with my playing, too. When I’m coming up with something, he’ll kind of keep pushing me, but he doesn’t ever tell me, ‘That sucks. What are you doing?’ He’s always very positive. He’s like a friend. He is kind of an unofficial band member, a mentor, and an older brother to us now at this point. We really listen to his advice on all things, but especially all things musical.”

The Offspring have found success, by this interviewer’s calculation, over the course of five decades. Noodles weighed in on my mistake.

“Four decades,” Noodles corrected me while laughing.. “1994 was really when we started to have any kind of success, and people noticed us as a band really, maybe to a lesser extent in 1992 with ‘Ignition.’ We started to develop a fan base around that record, but really it was 1994 with ‘Smash.’ when things took off. We’ve had hits in the 90s, the aughts, the tens, and now the ’20s; kind of crazy. But it’s four decades.”

Four? Five? What does it matter? The point is that the band’s longevity is beyond impressive. One benefit of surviving the ever-changing music industry for so long is that many fans who grew up in the ’90s listening to Noodles & Co. now have children of concert-appropriate age and are bringing them to Offspring shows in 2025. It must be quite the thrill for any performer to see two generations of fans, seated side by side, rocking out to their songs.

“It’s pretty cool. It really is,” he confirmed. “I don’t know when we became this cross-generational band, but we certainly are noticing it more and more and really, there’s a little bit of time when they’re pre-teens to early teenagers, where they really are kind of still listening and cool with your music, and then at some point, they hit it and they’re not cool with your music anymore actually. And then they come back in their twenties and start to listen to some of the same stuff you listen to as well. But from 16 until, I don’t know, 22 or 23, they’re over their parents’ music. So I love seeing families that come together and come to our show. It’s a cool feeling just to see that.”

The Offspring’s commercial is undeniable! Their 1994 album ‘Smash’ was certified 6x platinum, with ‘Americana‘ right behind it with more than five million copies sold. (This writer counted in that total!) In between, 1997’s ‘Ixnay on the Hombre’ also reached platinum status.

Album sales are now a very tiny fraction of what they once were. Streaming numbers are the new metric. The Offspring have accumulated more than 3.7 billion streams across their catalog. Not too shabby considering the world’s population is approximately 8 billion.

“It’s not album sales,” Noodles confirmed. “I’ve never really found those to be reliable metrics, personally. It’s always cool, and we get plaques that have numbers on them, and I go, ‘Oh, that’s cool!’ But honestly, there’s no better metric than when you take the stage and you come out and then the fans start singing along with what you’re doing. They start moving, they start dancing. They’re loud and they’re with you. That’s the best way to know you’re on to something. Lately, our shows have been getting bigger. The crowds have been getting bigger, but they’re still as energetic and as enthusiastic and loud as they’ve ever been. So I think that’s the best way to measure any of this.”

Video killed the radio star. Napster started the attack on album sales. iTunes came in and threw some punches. YouTube and Spotify delivered the death below. The Offspring’s album sales were one of the first casualties of the new normal.

“When ‘Smash’ came out, there was really none of that. And then towards the end of the nineties was when all that stuff started to come around: social media, etc.,” he said. “But really, file sharing and Napster, and there’s a bunch of different ways to share files, share songs, and stuff. Napster was probably the best known early on, and we knew that when we put out ‘Americana’ in 1998, it was really kind of doing well, and the songs were taking off on the radio, and ‘Pretty Fly (for A White Guy)’ was the most downloaded alternative rock song that year. Illegally downloaded!”

“We didn’t worry about it. Our record did really well,” he continued. “That’s when records still sold. So even though it was the most downloaded, we kind of thought that was just like radio, it’s like hearing a song for free on the radio, and then people still went out and bought the record. You get all the songs in the order they’re intended, with the artwork and liner notes and all that stuff. As a music fan, that’s how I’ve always seen music and how I felt it should be listened to and played. When I’m into a band, I get all up in that band and what’s going on with them. Who are these people? ‘Who writes that? Who plays what? Who’s the producer?’ All that stuff. It’s not so much like that anymore, though. There’s so much music, and it’s so easy to hit fast forward and move on to the next thing. And that really did kind of start, I guess, as early as 1999. Our reaction to it was, ‘This is going to happen. We can either fight it and try to hold back the tide with a broom, or we can try to use it somehow and work with it.’ So the next record after ‘Americana’ was illegally downloaded, pirated, or otherwise. We wanted to release our whole record on the internet, but our record label had different ideas.”

As a Cleveland-centric outlet, the city home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Noodles was asked one final question:

The Offspring’s commercial success, fan acclaim, ticket sales, career longevity, and influence on other artists check all the boxes that the Rock Hall inductees’ voting committee is looking for in prospective artists. So…Might fans see The Offspring singing on the walls of the museum in Cleveland one day?

This elicited a hearty laugh.

“Anything’s possible, but I don’t know if that’s really very likely,” he said (still laughing). “There are so many great bands that aren’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I would be flattered, but I guess I’m not counting on it. We’ll see!”

THE OFFSPRING WILL PERFORM AT BLOSSOM MUSIC CENTER ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13, WITH JIMMY EAT WORLD AND NEW FOUND GLORY. COMPLETE SHOW & TICKET INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND ON CLEVEROCK’S EVENT CALENDAR.
