On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, the Akron Civic Theatre came alive as Dancing with the Stars: Live! 2025 Tour swept the audience off their feet. With captivating dance routines, dazzling costumes, immersive sound, and vibrant, electrifying backdrops illuminated by explosive lighting, the performance created a truly magical experience.
Despite the frigid temperatures, with the mercury dipping below 30 degrees and calling for a parka, many young women arrived dressed to the nines. The cold weather did nothing to dampen their excitement and anticipation as they entered the Akron Civic Theatre, which was completely SOLD-OUT with all 2,600 seats filled.
The variety of music styles was unparalleled in recent performances, featuring over 30 mesmerizing dance routines that kept the energy high throughout the night. The electric atmosphere in the theater was contagious, with the audience erupting in cheers and applause as the dancers took the stage. Hostess and Pro Dancer Emma Slater, along with co-host Stephen Nedoroscik, a two-time Olympic medalist and pommel horse specialist, added a playful and humorous touch throughout the show, making the event feel both intimate and welcoming.
Pro Dancers: Alan Bersten, Brandon Armstrong, Britt Steward, Daniella Karacach, Emma Slater, Gleb Savchenko, Pasha Pashkov, Rylee Arnold, and Ezra Sosa completed the lineup for tonight’s show.
The show started with the crowd erupting in cheers as the stage was illuminated with vibrant spotlights. Suddenly, the lights went dark, and with a flash, the entire stage was flooded with strobe-like lighting and thunderous music. The raised back of the stage gleamed with framed lighting, and the dancers’ silhouettes appeared behind screens that flanked both sides of the upper and lower stage as they were introduced. They performed a well-choreographed routine that highlighted the dancers both individually and as a cohesive group. This performance was rocked with quick-footed flicks, body twists, lifts, and plenty of hip action. Just before the number concluded, the show experienced a brief audio glitch. However, the cast quickly turned the moment into an impromptu Q&A with the audience, offering an unexpected delight. The performance resumed shortly after, effortlessly picking up where it had left off.

The thematic backdrops were both versatile and breathtaking. One moment, the stage resembled a Matrix-style grid, and the next, it transformed with Art Deco-inspired lighting in bright white, illuminating the entire scene.
The stage’s music and lighting were key to the overall experience, setting the tone and accentuating the dancers’ intricate movements. It was an immersive journey, with the audience’s unwavering enthusiasm adding to the electric energy of the theater.
Dancers mingled with the audience, selecting a few lucky attendees to join them onstage for a mini-dance competition. Among them was the youngest participant, who appeared to be no more than 5 years old, adding an extra layer of charm and delight to the moment.
There was certainly something for everyone. Whether it was a waltz, tango, paso-doble or free-style the dancing showed controlled strength in lifts, jumps or dips, the footwork either sharp or smooth was measured and was a delight to see such creative movement and emotion. The dancers showed charisma and had wonderful chemistry and absolute trust in each other. Each dance performed was spectacular, and the crowd cheered without interruption.
The fast-paced transitions between numbers kept the audience visually engaged and buzzing with excitement. The dancing was phenomenal, with several memorable performances, but one that particularly stood out was the sultry 007-themed number. The dancers initially appeared as silhouettes against a fiery backdrop; in true 007 style, before stepping onto the stage, the men donned tuxedos and the ladies in flowing white sequined dresses that accentuated their movements and accentuated the contrasted masculine and feminine aspects as they performed a fabulous tango, weaving around the stage with intensity and precision. As the routine unfolded, other pairs of dancers joined in, including a bold moment where a male dancer paired with another man, showcasing the sharp, deliberate footwork of the tango in a fresh and captivating way.
The rapid succession of vibrant costume changes enhanced the visual appeal and brought out the thematic elements and variety of each dance that showcased the talent of each dancer, either individually or as a troupe. It was a captivating event that left everyone in awe.
I won’t give out any more spoilers as the show will pirouette back to the Akron Civic Theatre on Friday April 11th at 7:30.
