Gin Blossoms will roll into Lock 3 in Downtown Akron on Friday, June 26!
If you don’t expect too much from them, you might not be let down.
Hell, even if you expect a lot from them, you still won’t be let down.
Formed in Tempe, Arizona, in 1987, Gin Blossoms emerged as one of the defining bands of the alternative rock boom of the early 1990s. Blending jangly guitars, infectious melodies, and lyrics that balanced heartbreak with optimism, the group found mainstream success with their 1992 breakthrough album ‘New Miserable Experience.’ The record spawned a string of enduring hits, including “Hey Jealousy,” “Found Out About You,” “Until I Fall Away,” and “Allison Road.”
More than three decades later, Gin Blossoms remain a fixture on concert stages across North America. Their catalog continues to resonate with fans old and new, while the band’s reputation for energetic live performances has helped sustain a career that has outlasted many of their contemporaries. As they approach their 40th anniversary, Gin Blossoms continue to prove that great songs never go out of style.
They figured out how to outlast the vast majority of their peers.
They figured out how to persevere through the most severe turmoil that a band can go through (including losing founding member and principal member Doug Hopkins in 1993 due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.)
They figured out how to write songs which transcend generations.
“It’s very satisfying, because the goal always was to write good songs that were universal, and it’s great to know that our music isn’t only relevant if you were a teenager in 1995, that the songs are solid enough and universal messages included that anyone can relate to at any time,” said Gin Blossoms frontman Robin Wilson, checking in with CleveRock via phone ahead of the Akron date next week. “As a songwriter, that’s always been a goal of mine, to write something that lots and lots of people can relate to, and it isn’t specific to a certain time or place.”
Wilson & Co. are no stranger to Northeast Ohio. They come through the area on the majority of their tours, and have fond memories of the region. They celebrated a career highlight in Cleveland in 1995:
“We got the call to come up and perform at the grand opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We were tasked with doing a tribute to The Byrds and The Beatles. No pressure there,” Wilson remembers. “It was awesome being a part of such a great event and I remember vividly the opening of the show, I was standing in the audience right in front of the stage with the guys from Soul Asylum when Chuck Berry came out with Booker T. & The M.G.’s and, and we were looking around in the audience and there was every type of individual human you could imagine. I remember being on stage and realizing that standing about 10 feet away on the side of the stage, Don Henley and Jackson Brown were standing there watching us do The Byrds, and I just remember that moment and feeling like, ‘How did this happen to us?’ We were lucky that we were a part of it and that we had earned our way into that situation and felt a great deal of pride.”
At the Lock 3 show, they are sharing the stage with Akron’s own Dave Rich and his Enablers, but will spend the remaining three months on a grueling 35-date marathon tour alongside two other acts that broke into the mainstream in the 90s, Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors.
“It’s a privilege to be able to do that and to find a package that connects with people like this,” Wilson said. “This tour hit a chord and is vibrating with people in a way that is rare to find. Lucky for us, we get to be a part of it. We’re lucky that we’ve been in the fight this long and that we still have people that want to hear our music. I don’t take anything for granted.”
There is something special about bands that came up in the early-mid 90s. It’s hard to pinpoint. Perhaps, for this interviewer, it’s because the songs were the soundtrack to my formative years. It’s possible the music resonates more because this was the last generation of bands who had to squeak through narrow gates to break in on FM radio, because digital music was science fiction at the time. Or maybe, it was just a great era of music. One theory is as solid as any other! Bands who grew on listeners during this time window are able to pack venues each summer on the strength of their past catalogs; drawing crowds from multiple generations; parents who grew up listening to Gin Blossoms on the radio now bringing their children to shows. It’s doubtful that bands who came up a decade+ later will be able to accomplish the same thing.
“I would disagree with you! I think it’s only a matter of time before you see packaged tours like, My Morning Jacket with Hoobastank, at the casinos and stuff,” Wilson predicts. “I was talking with the guy who booked us at EPCOT, and was explaining to me how all the acts from the 60s, like Flo & Eddie and Peter Noone from Herman’s Hermits were starting to retire, and that we were in a great position to inherit those slots,” he continued. “I think it’s only a matter of time before we retire and those slots start going to All-American Rejects or whoever. It’s just a part of the natural progression.
Perhaps? Perhaps not. Time will tell!
Commercial success in the music industry is fickle. When Gini Blossoms released their sophomore album, 1992’s quadruple-platinum ’ ‘New Miserable Experience,’ to say their future was uncertain is a massive understatement.
“We didn’t know if we were breaking up or not,” Wilson recalls. “We lost our founding guitar player, our band leader, Doug Hopkins. We lost him while making the record and when we finished the album, we knew it was good, for us, relative to what we were capable of. We knew we had accomplished what we set out to do. Whether or not anyone would ever hear it was a complete mystery to us, a question mark that we couldn’t answer because we weren’t sure if we were going to survive. We weren’t sure if the label was going to drop us. We thought, ‘Well, maybe we’ll get a song on MTV. Maybe we can get on the radio somewhere.’ We didn’t think, ‘We’re going to sell millions of albums and we’ll be doing this for another 30 years.’
The music industry has been flipped on its head, then somersaulted down a steep hill with the digital music revolution. Gone are the days of needing to be on FM radio or MTV to get your music heard and when recording music required a large financial investment.In that regard, Wilson is old-school. He prefers the ways of yesteryear.
“We were a part of the last generation of bands and artists that came up in the classic style of the music industry, and it’s more difficult now than it was then,” Wilson said. “It’s always been really hard to break through and get a hit, but I think it’s even more difficult now. It’s just so different. A lot of hit songs these days have 15 songwriters on a Sabrina Carpenter song or something like that.
My son will tell me about some new artist and he’ll say, ‘Oh, he’s a YouTube star,’ he continued. “And I’m like, “YouTube star? Don’t give me that bullshit. Let’s see if he can get on the radio.’ I’m not saying it’s any more valid or that we worked any harder, but it’s definitely different and I’m glad we came up when we did.”
Fans strolling around Akron next Friday may be starstruck if they bump into Wilson.
“Paul Westerberg came to the show to see [opening act] Tommy Keene, and I remember meeting him in the hallway. I’m a big fan of The Replacements. They were one of the touchstones when we founded Gin Blossoms and they were a band that had a huge influence on us,” Wilson said. “We managed to play it cool and not embarrass ourselves, but in our heads we’re like, ‘Holy shit, we’re standing here backstage at our show talking with Paul Westerberg.’
Wilson topped his own story:
“Another big one was when I got to front Kiss on Letterman, and now this is literally something that I was dreaming about, literal, actual dreams, that I had when I was in the sixth grade of performing with Kiss on television and I got to do it. I got to front Kiss on Letterman. Just saying those words out loud is really awesome.”
For all the stories about platinum records, MTV, Rock Hall performances, backstage encounters with legends, and even fronting Kiss on national television, Wilson still comes across as a guy who can’t quite believe any of it happened. Maybe that’s part of the Gin Blossoms’ enduring appeal. They’ve never carried themselves like untouchable rock stars. They seem more like the talented friends who somehow won the lottery, remained grateful for the ticket, and still show up ready to play the songs that helped soundtrack millions of lives. In an era when careers can disappear faster than a TikTok trend, there’s something refreshing about a band that has spent nearly four decades simply writing good songs, showing up, and earning every mile along the way.
So if you find yourself at Lock 3 next Friday, don’t be surprised if the crowd includes everyone from Gen Xers reliving their glory days to younger fans discovering these songs for the first time. That’s the magic of Gin Blossoms. The hits still hit. The choruses still stick. And judging by Wilson’s enthusiasm, the band still genuinely enjoys being out there doing it. Not bad for a group that once wasn’t sure it would survive long enough to release its breakthrough album. Thirty-plus years later, they’re still standing, still touring, and still proving that some experiences are anything but miserable.
