INTERVIEW: Stewart Copeland

It’s not every day that you get to meet someone you’ve looked up to for so long. One of the reasons I have such a love for concerts is my overall love of music. What you may not know about me is that I’ve been playing drums for 30 years. Not professionally, not even regularly, and not for anyone else—just by myself.

Drummers are a different breed. We don’t always get the same respect. We’re not up front, we’re not the lead vocals, we don’t have guitar solos, and the solos we do have aren’t always for everyone. But for those who know, drumming is a close-knit community, and the respect for one another is real. It’s a club for the kids who could never sit still and found an outlet in hitting something in a way that made sense to others, too.

Stewart Copeland is a member of that club; he’s a leader of that club. Ask any drummer who is in their top ten, and chances are Stewart Copeland will be on that list. While his time with The Police was only eight years long, his beats, patterns, and sound have never stopped resonating with drummers everywhere.

This interview was special to me. Not only did I go in as a music fan, but I was also, in some small way, part of that little club. I can relate to him and understand him. I may not have had his success or performed in front of arena crowds, but I understand what makes him tick. Well, at least I thought I did.
