Justin Hayward Concert Review (Kent Stage; 12.06.24)

Reading Time: 4 mins read

Attending Justin Hayward’s Blue World Tour concert was an evening filled with nostalgia, emotion, and exceptional musical artistry. Held at Kent Stage, the event gathered fans of The Moody Blues and admirers of Hayward’s solo work in a cozy and welcoming setting.  This performance was professionally video and audio recorded, and attendees were kindly asked to keep their cell phones off to avoid disruptions.

Kent Stage, a smaller venue with about 650 seats, provided the perfect setting for the evening. Built nearly 100 years ago and renovated for concerts around 2002, the venue boasts excellent acoustics and an easily accessible location. Having seen Hayward perform in large arenas with The Moody Blues, experiencing his artistry in this intimate space was a remarkable contrast.  The personal atmosphere allowed for a deeper connection to the music and the man behind it, as the conversations with the audience offered insight into his personality and talent. The stage was tastefully lit, lending to the focus being on the performers.  The audio was toned down from typical rock concert levels and was perfectly clear, making for a truly intimate evening. This performance was a must-see for fans, blending nostalgia with an unforgettable up-close experience.

Mike Dawes’ opening performance was truly technically innovative. Dawes is known for his amazing talent of using both hands (right hand in particular) in unconventional ways to get as much out of the instrument as possible (Dawes’ words). He demonstrated this by using the guitar to add bass (instant change in tune) or adding a bass drum sound and in other ways that I cannot describe.  Photos in the Caught-on Camera section of CleveRock have a few photos of his different hand positions. One of his guitar idols is Eddy Van Halen. In honor of Eddy, Dawes performed his acoustic version of “Jump” (complete with the on-stage jump).

After a short intermission, Justin Hayward entered the stage to what was the start of a memorable evening. He was joined by three other musicians: Julie Ragins (keyboards), Karmen Gould (flute), and, re-entering the stage, Mike Dawes. From the moment Hayward stepped onto the stage, guitar in hand, his signature voice captivated the audience. Opening with “Tuesday Afternoon,” a Moody Blues classic, drew cheers from the audience and set the tone for the night. His vocals, though matured, remain velvety and evocative, effortlessly transporting listeners through decades of beloved hits.

The setlist was mostly a mix of The Moody Blues staples, but he did perform a few that were outside of their catalog, like the single “Living for Love.” Hayward also spent time sharing different parts of his career. As a prelude to a medley, he described rehearsing a mix of six songs in the presbytery of his local Catholic church. He humorously recalled an unexpected “presence” behind him- later revealed to be someone asking for directions to the kitchen. The medley combined songs from The Moody Blues and his solo catalog. While less familiar to some, these pieces were beautifully delivered, demonstrating his timeless ability to connect with his audience through music. Other selections throughout the evening included The Moody Blues’ heartfelt renditions of “Nights in White Satin” and “The Story in Your Eyes.” Hayward also introduced songs from his solo career, showcasing his continued evolution as a songwriter.

The band accompanying Hayward offered a fresh take on the classic Moody Blues sound. Without a bass guitar or drums, the arrangements seamlessly adapted to the intimate acoustic style of the show. The original Moody Blues music was so well written that the acoustic transition worked well.  The stage was lit modestly and tastefully, providing no distractions to the performance.

Julie Ragins, a longtime collaborator with Hayward, provided bass lines, percussion, and special effects through her versatile keyboard work. Her years of performing with Hayward were evident in their strong on-stage chemistry.

Karmen Gould’s flute added a signature element to the sound, her expertise resonated through in this performance. A veteran flutist, Gould is also known for covering several rock guitar solos, with her flute.

Rounding out the group, Mike Dawes was exceptional! His acoustic guitar work perfectly complemented Hayward’s guitar style. The group’s history with Hayward brought a new cohesiveness to the ensemble, which was especially apparent in this intimate venue.

Hayward’s final song was “Nights in White Satin” which led to another standing ovation and encouraging the “encore.”  The encore consisted of three classics; “The Story in Your Eyes, You and Me” and “I know You’re Out There Somewhere. ” Both Hayward and Dawes strapped on electric guitars and the guitar shredding began!

By the time the band took its final bows and the audience had departed, they left entertained and deeply touched. For Justin Hayward and Moody Blues fans, the Blue World Tour offers more than just a performance—it’s an opportunity to reflect, reminisce, and celebrate the timeless beauty of music.
