Kathleen Madigan Interview

T. Patrick Fenner by T. Patrick Fenner
January 24, 2026
in Interviews
Reading Time: 7 mins read

Cleveland comedy fans are in for a night of pure escapism when Kathleen Madigan brings “The Day Drinking Tour” to town on March 7. The veteran stand-up will headline the KeyBank State Theatre, part of the Playhouse Square district in downtown Cleveland, promising a mix of new material, fan-favorite bits, and the kind of lived-in storytelling that has made her one of America’s most enduring road comics.

Madigan, who has spent more than three decades crisscrossing the country in clubs and theaters rather than chasing sitcoms or movie roles, has built a career that’s both quietly historic and stubbornly grounded. She’s the classic “comedian’s comedian” who managed to become a fan favorite without any single breakout Hollywood moment—no starring network sitcom, no blockbuster film, no big late-night hosting gig. Instead, she’s done it the old-fashioned way: show by show, city by city, year after year, building a loyal audience that keeps coming back.

A huge part of Madigan’s legacy is her stand-up on screen. She has released six hit specials over the course of her career, each one refining her storytelling and adding new layers of observation while maintaining the same essential voice. Those specials—found across platforms like Amazon, Netflix, Max, Showtime, and Comedy Central—have allowed her to reach millions of viewers who might not yet have seen her on tour.

Her latest release, “The Family Thread,” dropped in 2025 on Amazon Prime and has quickly become a critical high point. The special has earned glowing reviews.

“The Family Thread” captures what Madigan does best: long-form, personal storytelling that somehow feels both intimately specific and universally relatable.

Ask Madigan about her writing process and she’ll tell you she doesn’t really “write jokes” in the classic sense. Her stand-up is almost entirely autobiographical.

“Mine’s all true, but I’ve always been like that. I tell stories. That’s what I do,” she explained in a recent phone interview with CleveRock.com. “They’re all true. And that’s how I don’t sit down and write a joke ever. I don’t go to writing sessions. I don’t write with other comedians. I mean, I’ll help them if they need a tagline or punch up or something, but I don’t, because I’m telling you stuff. It’s very much like Ron White. Everything he says has happened. If you want to be a joke writer, and Mitch Hedberg was great at it, just weird thoughts he has, that’s fine. But I’m just more of a telling you a bar conversation. I’m a lot more story based than joke based.”

One of the freshest veins of material for Madigan right now is her extended family, especially the next generation. Many of her nieces and nephews have recently become teenagers, and the comedian has been finding plenty of inspiration in watching them stumble through the basics of adulthood.

“I’m trying to work on this whole segment about teenagers. Most of my nieces and nephews have now become teenagers, and it just makes me laugh because they’re all very, very much taller than I am,” she quipped. “When I look at them, because they’re taller than me, I just assume they know stuff like, ‘You should be smart; you’re taller than me.’ The stuff that they do not know, their heads are just blank on.”

She recounts one exchange with her nephew that illustrates the blend of dark humor and family warmth that defines so much of her act:

“My one nephew was getting his driver’s license and I was helping him fill out paperwork and I go:

‘Do you want to be an organ donor?’

And he goes,

‘Now!?’

‘Now? Do you don’t know if there’s an operating room in the back and I’m going to take your liver? No, not now! Just as a whole.’

I’m trying to even think about teenagers. That’s a new chunk in there. There’s a lot of new stuff that I’m just working on. I had to kind of stick to my guns. I filmed that special this past summer and edited it all this summer. So I had to kind of keep that intact and now I can just keep moving forward. I kept doing it the exact same way. By the time a special came around, it was locked in and now I’m not. Now I call myself a free range chicken. I can do whatever I want.”

As anyone who’s followed Madigan’s career knows, casinos, sportsbooks, and general low-stakes degeneracy are recurring themes in her act. She often jokes about gambling not as a reckless addiction but as a sort of absurd, self-aware hobby—one that, in typical Kathleen fashion, gets repurposed into a teachable moment for younger relatives.

“I think if they would make it a little more practical, if somebody would’ve taught me Blackjack and Craps, I would’ve been more interested in the math,” Madigan said. “Otherwise, to me, it’s just intangible, and I don’t care, and then I drift out, and it’s bad. There’s so many things. I probably shouldn’t be advocating it, but DraftKings just became legal in Missouri, so I was teaching my nephew how to read it all. Here’s New England plus three, what does that mean? And over/under, and here’s the over/under. And there’s a lot of math involved, and I suck at math, but I’m determined. I like to gamble to get through it, so it’s more fun that way.”

Those who show up in Cleveland can expect to see parts of that set—though, as Madigan explains, she’s always careful about how she builds a live show after taping a special.

“Usually, when I do a special, if you come to the show, you will see some of that. You’ll see some of that, along with old specials’ stuff and then new stuff. So it’s like a third, a third, a third. I’m trying to keep it balanced,” she said “There’s always a few good ones that you can still throw in there that people get excited to see you do. They already know it, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less funny. And I feel the same way if I’m sitting there in the crowd.”

In an era when many comics dive headfirst into partisan politics, Madigan clearly sees her role differently. She’s not there to deliver hot takes or change minds. In fact, she’s moved away from political jokes almost entirely.

“I try to stay away from anything heavy at this point. Back in the day, I had a few Obama jokes or Hillary jokes or whatever, and they liked them, but nobody got mad about them. And now everything’s just so volatile. I’m just going to not do any of that for now.”

There’s honesty in that self-deprecation, but also a clear sense of purpose. Madigan doesn’t want her shows to feel like a battleground. She wants them to feel like a reprieve.

“That’s what I’m hoping to do, provide a break from whatever your problems are. They can be your problems, they can be the world’s problems, whatever. I don’t pay attention to anything else for an hour and a half. I love it. That’s how I hope my audience, people who came, you had a great time, you remember a few lines that’ll still make you laugh by yourself in your car, no matter what. I hope it’s a great escape.”

Madigan’s relationship with her audience doesn’t end when the theater doors close. In 2020, during the pandemic, she launched “Madigan’s Pubcast,” a podcast that quickly became an extension of her onstage persona—part bar stool conversation, part news-of-the-week riff, part travelogue from a life spent on the road.

“Madigan’s Pubcast” now boasts more than 10 million streams and over 200 episodes, a testament to the loyalty of her fanbase and the comfort of the format. In each episode, the comedian pours a drink (often literally) and spirals through topics that range wildly in tone and importance: one minute Taylor Swift, the next Area 51; one minute family gossip, the next conspiracies, sports, or whatever oddball headline caught her eye.

“Madigan’s Pubcast” is widely available, including on major platforms such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts, as well as her official website.

For an hour and a half, as the comedian herself says, the goal is simple: put the outside world on pause and just laugh. And, if you happen to find yourself down in The Flats after the show, you might even spot her at Harbor Inn, quarters in hand, tracking down that beloved old bowling machine and raising a beer to another night on the road.

KATHLEEN MADIGAN IS SCHEDULED TO PERFORM AT PLAYHOUSE SQUARE’S KEYBANK STATE THEATRE ON MARCH 7. COMPLETE SHOW AND TICKET DETAILS CAN BE FOUND ON PLAYHOUSE SQUARE’S OFFICIAL WEBSITE.
