What’s a better way to spend 4/20 on a Saturday in Cleveland than with the fun loving sexiest boy band, Mickey Darling. The San Antonio, TX based indie-pop duo consisting of Skyler Molina and Austin Medrano had the Grog shop shaking from the beginning to the end.
Fittingly walking out to “Hey Mickey” by Toni Basil when Mickey Darling hit the stage the room went absolutely feral. They have one of the best stage presences. They gave many hugs, jumped around in the crowd several times, and even sang happy birthday to a couple lucky fans. I understand why they have such a loyal fan base—it’s because they treat everyone like a friend. They shined bright on stage but as the resident photographer of the night as well as the reviewer the stage lighting was less than optimal. This was their first time in Cleveland and it seemed clear that this would not be their last.
Mickey Darling carries a powerful punch of emotion that transcends not just their incredibly relatable lyrics but musically through their overall pop noise. This was simply indisputable after witnessing the immense spirit of the crowd on every single track. It felt as if every single fan knew every single word, to every single song, the emotional connection the group makes with their listeners is unmistakable. The group played songs from their infancy as a group, “I’m just a Buzzkill” to their most recent release “Blah Blah Blah” featuring one of their openers Nick Wagen, which had everyone jumping with carefree joy that lives forever in that moment.
As their set was coming to an end it was then they reminded the crowd that they are just two guys from a suburban town in Texas who make music in their bedroom. They said that if anyone in the audience needed a sign to keep pursuing their dreams, this was that sign. The two have such a clear passion for their art as well as a genuine respect and connection with one another with which they can’t help but lovingly share with the world.
The show wrapped up with their biggest hit, “Reverse Cowgirl”. Everyone in the audience was singing their hearts out, it was a great way to finish the concert. Truly a night to remember for all in attendance and I encourage everyone to check this dynamic duo out.
